ESTABLISHING WHAT PROBLEMS WE ARE SOLVING

Luisa stated she found new clients mainly through word of mouth and applying for open positions online. Nothing wrong with that approach but she said she found it difficult when the companies asked her for examples of her work.

She had a list of documents and links in a google drive document that she would send to prospective clients but understandably this is time consuming and inefficient. Clients simply don't want to click on 20 separate links.

Luisa also expressed her interest in passively generating leads through visiting her website by selling her services framed in a marketing narrative to convert them.

With Luisa being a social media professional she already has great knowledge on digital marketing so there was no need to focus on that. We aimed to create an attractive product with great UX and conversion inducing copy.

FIGURING OUT IF OTHER PROJECTS EXIST

To put it bluntly other social media professionals don't really utilise website portfolios to generate business. A few had one but it was the minority. They generally use LinkedIn or social media accounts to market their services.

Sounds self explanatory right? Your service is creating social media content, surely marketing through social media is enough? No! A big chunk of companies refuse to hire contractors through social media for various reasons. These competitors were missing out on a part of the market by not having an online portfolio.

The few portfolios we did find were brief, succinct, clearly defined their services and provided evidence of their work & success metrics high in the visual hierarchy. So that's what we set out to do.

The design solution

WHY DID WE DESIGN THE SITE THE WAY WE DID?

During the planning phase we found out Luisa was a talented photographer & videographer. Two very valuable skills to social media content creation. She had even won several awards for her work.

Bearing this in mind we decided to go with an artistic visual design & include images she had taken and show her with cameras and on film sets. This was to allow Luisa to stand out against her competitors and show off her artistic talents.

The visual design had a soft, matte palette to give it an "artsy" feel with bold, pleasing imagery to compliment and contrast against the simplistic backdrop. Sans serif fonts seemed to match the aesthetic the best. Images were given canvas borders to almost represent paintings.
