Designing & building a platform to inspire young people to engage in politics.

The problem statements

ESTABLISHING WHAT PROBLEMS WE ARE SOLVING

The Our voice our community project had gained some success with events and offline work but they had no online presence outside of their social media platforms to showcase their success or generate political interest with young people.

They wanted the website to inspire, gain interest, provide evidence of young people affecting the world and provide a curated list of helpful links for the young people to go off, do their own research and get involved in local politics.

They had a vision, but nowhere to present it online.

The market research

FIGURING OUT IF OTHER PROJECTS EXIST

Unfortunately, we couldn't find any other similar websites to create a base knowledge. There were plenty of resources explaining how to get young people involved in local politics and the benefits however.

So the direction of the research moved towards understanding the thought processes of a young person becoming aware of a project, what information they needed or didn't like and providing a sufficient solution to connect them to organisations to become involved.

The information was primarily found in empirical studies and articles written by local councils and the Youth Parliament UK initiative.

No websites for similar projects exist

The user journey

THE JOURNEY TO INSPIRE YOUNG PEOPLE TO GET INVOLVED

As stated above we read empirical studies & YPUK articles to get a good understanding of the current environment of youth opinion on politics and why they aren't engaging, and how to create interesting, inspiring content to change that.

The biggest issues with young people is thinking their opinion or voice has no impact, older people don't respect their opinion & they don't trust the political situation in the UK.

So we crafted up a user journey to visually represent the different stages of the a young persons thought process when interacting with political materials to guide them through our content and reach a conclusion. That journey is below.

WHAT ARE WE AIMING TO DELIVER

We found out through our research how to inspire young people, now it was a case of translating those steps into a web interface. Below are the project deliverables.

Create a bespoke visual design to appeal to young people

The design solution

WHY DID WE DESIGN THE SITE THE WAY WE DID?

We had to make this project appealing to young people so we had to ensure there was not too much text used and we had bright, visually appealing graphics and imagery to draw attention to key content.

We came up with the "speech bubble" concept because of the project name. All buttons and some elements are shaped like speech bubbles to create an accurate brand to give the site an extra layer of professionalism.

The user journey was planned out like a story like our market research instructed with steps to inspire, give examples, explain benefits and provide knowledge & opportunity to get started.
